Every traveler has a story that never makes it into the vacation photos.
The missed connection. The strange encounter. The moment when a carefully planned journey takes a turn nobody could have anticipated.
In February 1992, I was traveling from Bangkok, Thailand, to New Delhi, India. An unexpected upgrade to Business Class on an Air France Boeing 747 seemed like a welcome reward after a long journey from Alaska. Fine French wine and an elaborate dinner promised a pleasant evening in the air.
But as it turned out, the French cuisine would become a side story.
An encounter with a passenger across the aisle changed everything.
The flight offered all the makings of a memorable evening. I had an upper-deck seat, a multi-course meal, and excellent wine. It should have been one of those comfortable flights when you sit back, enjoy the food, and watch the hours pass until you reach your destination.
Instead, the behavior of another passenger created an increasingly uncomfortable situation, making it nearly impossible to enjoy the dinner.
There were several possible ways to respond, but none seemed particularly appealing. A confrontation could have made matters worse, especially when traveling between countries and unsure what might happen next.
So I decided not to escalate the situation and simply get through the flight.
It wasn’t the kind of adventure anyone would deliberately choose. Yet it became the sort of story that stays with a traveler long after the boarding pass has been discarded.
Travel brings us into close quarters with people we might never otherwise encounter.
On a plane, train, or crowded street, we don’t get to choose everyone around us. Sometimes we meet extraordinary people who make our journeys better than we could have imagined. Other times, we encounter behavior that tests our patience.
I’ve learned that travel requires more than curiosity and a willingness to explore unfamiliar places. It also requires patience, flexibility, and the ability to keep your composure when circumstances become uncomfortable.
An unpleasant encounter can quickly become a much bigger problem if frustration takes over. Staying calm doesn’t mean accepting inappropriate behavior. It means thinking clearly, protecting yourself, and knowing when to ask for help.
Sometimes the smartest move isn’t to win an argument. It’s to make sure the incident ends safely.
Eventually, I arrived in New Delhi, and the flight was behind me. The dinner was over, the uncomfortable encounter had ended, and India was waiting.
But the story remained.
That’s one of the curious things about travel. The experiences we remember most vividly aren’t always the ones we would choose. Sometimes they’re awkward, frustrating, or downright bizarre. Yet with time, even an uncomfortable experience can become a story we tell with a little more perspective and perhaps a touch of humor.
My travels have taken me to places where I’ve encountered people whose lives, cultures, and experiences were very different from my own. Those encounters have taught me that we rarely know what to expect when we step outside our familiar surroundings.
And that’s part of the appeal.
Travel doesn’t always follow the itinerary. Flights don’t always go as planned, strangers don’t always behave as we hope, and the experiences we remember most may have little to do with the destination itself.
Not every journey gives us the memories we wanted. But almost every journey gives us something to talk about.
And sometimes, the best stories begin when things go wrong.
If another passenger behaves inappropriately, prioritize your safety. Avoid escalating the situation and discreetly notify a flight attendant. You don’t have to handle disruptive behavior on your own.
As Susan Sontag once wrote, “I have not been everywhere, but it is on my list.”
What’s the most unexpected thing that has ever happened to you while traveling? Was it a funny mishap, an awkward encounter, or a situation that tested your patience? I’d enjoy hearing your story. Sometimes the journeys that go wrong make the best stories later.
